Two days ago, I hardly slept 5 1/2 hours, since I had a streetlight right in my face. So I slept 8 hours last night, and set off at 8:00. Today was the peak of the 5th heat wave this summer, so by 9:00 I already needed to soak my running top and desert cap.

A little after the solemnly-named Terradillos de Los Templarios (Allotments of the Templar Knights) (photo 1) and its lovely cave dwellings (photo 2), I entered León Province (photo 3), and a while later, through the half-Camino monument (photo 4).

The tracks were sandy, so I ran 23k by 11:00 in Sahagún. I did some shopping in this county capital, and took my time over brunch here.

Its pilgrims' monument (photo 5) is the nicest I've seen so far, and its historic arch on leaving wouldn't be so deteriorated in any other capital (photo 6).

I didn't want to injure my heels, which are recovering well from the stony paths of Palencia, so I only did 5k more to an agricultural village called Calzada del Coto.

(foto 10)

These tiny villages are incredible (photos 7 and 8). Apart from an argument between a posh townie who wanted "a proper newspaper" in its only bar (curt answer by the owner: "Yeah, well only two old fellows ever read it"), the only other amusement on offer was the arrival of the Tour of León (photo 9). 45km/h average speed! (photo 10).
