The French police soon stopped my plans. They had blocked the road to Lourdes at 9:00, so I parked my van and cycled on backroads as far as I could. I could see it was going to be impossible to reach either La Mongie or the Cols.
La policia francesa paró mis planes de golpe. Habían cerrado la carretera a Lourdes a las 9h, así que aparqué mi furgoneta y fui en bici por caminos hasta donde pude. Ya veía que iba a ser imposible llegar ni a La Mongie ni a los puertos.
However, I soon met a French cyclist with an English ex-pro, and when the bunch had passed and the road was clear (photo 1), we cycled to the final climb at Cauterets together. I bought Tour de France T-shirts for my 2 nephews, saw Rafa Majka win the stage (photo 2 - behind the motorbike!), loved the atmosphere and cycled back to my van, getting there at 19:00.
Sin embargo, pronto conocí a un ciclista francés con un expro inglés, y cuando el peletón ya había pasado y la carretera estaba despejada (foto 1), fuimos a la última subida a Cauterets juntos. Compré camisetas del Tour de Francia para mis dos sobrinos franceses, vi a Rafa Majka ganar la etapa (foto 2 - !detrás de la moto!), me encantó el ambiente, y volví en bici a mi furgoneta, llegando allí a las 19:00.
I had cycled 80k on ondulating terrain on the hottest day of the year so far. It was great to ride the draft of real cyclists again, but they had made me suffer! I fell asleep full of respect for the real professionals...
Había hecho 80k en bici sobre terreno ondulado en el día más caloroso del año. Me encantó ir al rebufo de unos ciclistas de verdad de nuevo, !pero me habían hecho sufrir! Me dormí sintiendo un gran respeto por los profesionales de verdad...
The Tourmalet and Aspin can wait until after Santiago. If Mohammad can't go the mountain...
