Day/Dia 1 - Roncesvallés-Zubiri 22k

I arrived at the start of the Saint James' Way in Roncesvallés at 11:30 a.m. on the bus, so I ran in the blazing sun at 35C, and walked in the shade, which is plentiful here in the Pyreneen foothills.

Llegué al principio del Camino de Santiago en Roncesvallés en autobús a las 11h30, así que corrí bajo un sol abrasador a 35C, y caminé a la sombra.

This was the third time I had done this stage, so no surprises, except the last 5k scree descent to Zubiri. On the signs it's marked as only 2k, and I had forgotten about the brutal difference. I didn't mind, as I was running downhill.

Esta era la tercera vez que había hecho esta etapa, así que no hubo sorpresas, menos el último descenso empedrado de 5k hasta Zubiri. En los carteles pone 2k, y me había olvidado de la diferencia brutal. No me importaba, ya que iba corriendo hacia abajo.

However, a worried young German guy asked me how much was left, and I said to him only 1k instead of 4k. His girlfriend was sitting next to him with evident signs of sunstroke. Well, you can't win them all!

Sin embargo, un joven alemán me preguntó preocupado cuánto quedaba. Le dije que sólo 1k en vez de 4. Su novia estaba sentada a su lado con signos evidentes de un golpe de calor. Bueno, no se puede acertar todo.

I wonder how they got on. I'm now lying in the dormitory which is half-full of the usual collection of knackered youngsters. No worries, they'll get fit in 10 days! They always do...

Me pregunto cómo les fue. Ahora estoy tumbado en el dormitorio rodeado de los jóvenes hechos polvo habituales. No pasa nada, !estarán en forma en 10 días! Siempre pasa igual...
